Red Ribbon Week Celebration

This week, Valley View Junior High is celebrating Red Ribbon Week which is the oldest and largest drug prevention program in the nation.  The Red Ribbon Week campaign was started when drug traffickers in Mexico City murdered DEA agent Kiki Camarena in 1985.  In honor of Camarena's memory and his battle against illegal drugs, his friends and neighbors began to wear read badges of satin. This began the tradition of displaying Red Ribbons as a symbol of intolerance towards the use of drugs.  The mission of the Red Ribbon Campaign is to create a drug free America and it has touched of millions of lives over the years.

What can you do as a parent to support Red Ribbon Week?  Below are some ideas from the Red Ribbon Week Campaign website:

*  Use Red Ribbon Week as an opportunity to continue talking to your kids about drugs.  Let them know that alcohol and drug use will not be tolerated.
*  Watch Natural High's free celebrity drug prevention videos with your child and use their discussion questions to have a conversation with them about drugs and alcohol.
*  Secure and take inventory of your medicine cabinet to prevent prescription drug abuse
*  Get to know the parents of your children's friends.  Work together to set boundaries and monitor behavior
